I hope to continue to build upon what I have learned, challenge myself, and grow as a person through new experiences so that I can make my mark on this university and my community. I intend to use both of my degrees and my experiences to increase access to education and civic and economic participation for the most underserved and underprivileged populations in both the US and abroad through public policy and community organization.

LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY

“Leadership” takes on a number of different forms in my life from specific titles to active involvement in various organizations. The aspects of leadership that remain consistent however, are presence, challenge, collaboration, and reflection. Being present mentally and physically is something that I value personally when working with others and something that I try to embody in every situation. Time is our most valuable asset and I choose to be respectful not wasting my time or anyone else’s by not being fully present mentally or physically. As a leader, I not only have a responsibility to be present but also to continually challenge myself. Leadership is not an end goal but an iterative journey; one that requires that I push myself to learn new things via new experiences and place myself in situations that force me to seek out innovative and unique solutions. Part of coming up with unique and innovative solutions involves bringing in other people. Collaboration, networking, and building relationships are not important simply for coming up with solutions (two brains are better than one), but also for instilling a sense of shared responsibility and encouraging others to utilize their own leadership skills and potential. One of my favorite aspects about learning about leadership is being able to recognize others and share what I learn to build their confidence in their own leadership ability. Finally, reflection is a large part of my leadership philosophy. Being able to understand that I have reached my limit, that I have learned all that I can from a particular experience, and recognize when to push forward and when to move on, helps me to maintain a healthy balance in life so that I can continue to grow and be the best that I can be.

I believe that external leadership is best received when a person can lead themselves internally in their own lives. Through a leadership philosophy that focuses on personal growth and cultivation, I am better able to recognize and celebrate others on their leadership oriented journeys.
